An enormously difficult film to see Los Angeles Plays Itself surprised a lot of people when it showed up on several writers best of the decade lists recently. A surprise only because so few people have been lucky enough to see it, those who have however have been quick to recognise it as a truly remarkable film. An elaborately constructed film essay, put together by film academic Thom Anderrsen, and relying solely on previously existing cinematic representations of the city it explores a Los Angeles that has been constructed by and through the movies. A treat for any committed film fan and a highlight of the festival. |
