Red Dust
Victor Fleming, (1932) 83 mins.
Screening Sunday 14th 4.15pm €12

When Kevin Brownlow was asked if he would like to select a non-silent title for the programme 'Red Dust' was his first choice. The film is the perfect Sunday matinee and will make for an ideal Mother's Day film for anyone thinking ahead. The film was directed by the great, but often overlooked, Victor Fleming who would go on in 1939 to direct 'The Wizard of Oz' and 'Gone With The Wind' (in the same year no less!). Steamier than Gone With The Wind, 'Red Dust' plays almost like a distilled version of the same. Full of whip crack dialogue (delivered by the unbeatable pairing of Clark Gable and Jean Harlow), the film is pre-code and so can get away with a little more than those later films. Screening from an immaculate 35mm print, with two of the biggest and most magnetic stars of the silver screen, surely this is what the movies were made for?

A perfect Mother's Day movie.
